Xfinity Mobile Free-Line Deal: 5 Checks Before July 21

Something important is happening in the bundle aisle: Xfinity is using a free wireless-line offer to make its home internet package look cheaper. That can be a real savings opportunity, but only if you qualify and know what the bill becomes after the first year.

Xfinity's mobile plan page says Mobile Select is being advertised at $0 a month for one year, then $30 a month with Xfinity Internet. The same fine print says the offer ends July 21, requires Xfinity Internet, and still leaves taxes, fees, and other applicable charges outside the headline price.

The useful part is clear: a household that already wants Xfinity Internet and needs one basic unlimited phone line could lower its first-year wireless cost. The risky part is just as clear: this is not a standalone wireless deal, and the promotion depends on a bundle, bill credits, and post-promo pricing.

1. Make sure the internet requirement fits your household

Xfinity says the free Mobile Select line is available only with Xfinity Internet. Its promotional language also says new internet customers can get 300 Mbps internet with a free Xfinity Mobile line included for a year, while the fine print says Xfinity Mobile requires Xfinity Internet.

What this means for you: do not compare the $0 wireless line against a $25 prepaid phone plan by itself. Compare the total Xfinity Internet plus mobile bill against your current internet plus phone bill.

2. Check whether the $0 line is really available to you

The fine print says the first-year savings apply to new Xfinity Mobile members and require residential post-pay 300 Mbps internet or above. It also says the discount is limited to the value of one Select line and is applied through 12 monthly bill credits.

What this means for you: ask Xfinity to confirm the exact account requirements before you port a number. If you already have Xfinity Mobile, use a lower-speed internet tier, or need a tablet or watch line, the advertised setup may not match your situation.

3. Add taxes, fees, and the after-year-one price

The Mobile Select card says the line is free for a year, then $30 a month with Xfinity Internet. The fine print says taxes, fees, and other applicable charges are extra and subject to change after the first year.

What this means for you: write down three numbers: month one, month 13, and the cost if you cancel or change internet service. A promotion that is excellent for 12 months can become average if the regular monthly total is not competitive.

4. Look closely at hotspot and data rules

Xfinity lists Mobile Select with unlimited talk, text, and data in the U.S. It also lists unlimited mobile hotspot data, but says speeds are reduced after 15GB. The plan page separately says Mobile Select data may be slowed during network congestion after 50GB.

What this means for you: Mobile Select may work well for normal phone use, but it is not a blank check for tethering a laptop all month. If hotspot matters, compare the 15GB reduced-speed threshold with your last few bills before switching.

5. Value the perks only if you will use them

Xfinity says Mobile Select includes unlimited talk, text, and data for travel in 215-plus destinations, automatic WiFi PowerBoost on eligible gateways and hotspots, and access to 20-plus million WiFi hotspots. It also says international data speeds are reduced after 10GB a month.

What this means for you: these perks can help if you travel, use Xfinity hotspots, or spend a lot of time on home Wi-Fi. They should not outweigh weak coverage at your house, a poor internet price, or a better all-in wireless deal elsewhere.
