AST SpaceMobile now has 13 BlueBird satellites in orbit after launching three more spacecraft, a concrete expansion of the network that Verizon and AT&T expect to use for cellular coverage beyond the reach of ground towers. The added capacity moves the project closer to consumer service, but it does not yet give wireless customers a firm activation date, coverage map or price.
In an August 10 business update, AST said BlueBirds 11, 12 and 13 joined the constellation following their August 5 launch. Together with BlueBirds 8 through 10, the mission means AST placed six spacecraft in orbit within 50 days. The company said it is preparing for beta service during 2026 and expects another launch in September.
That launch cadence matters because a satellite-to-cell network needs enough spacecraft, ground infrastructure and carrier integration to provide useful coverage. One successful demonstration can prove that a connection works; a larger constellation is required to make those connections available across broader areas and for longer periods.
The launch adds capacity, not continuous service
The three satellites rode a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Space.com independently reported that the rocket deployed all three spacecraft in low Earth orbit over an 11-minute period beginning about 53 minutes after liftoff.
BlueBirds 11 through 13 are part of AST’s newer satellite generation, which uses a phased-array antenna of roughly 2,400 square feet. AST says this generation is expected to deliver nearly twice the peak download speed achieved by its first five commercial BlueBird satellites. Those earlier spacecraft produced a reported peak of 98.9 Mbps in testing, although a peak laboratory or demonstration result should not be read as the everyday speed a paying customer will receive.
Real-world performance will depend on available spectrum, the number of users sharing a beam, the customer’s location, satellite visibility and how each carrier configures the service. AST has not published a consumer-facing speed range, data allowance or congestion policy for the planned U.S. offerings.
The company’s latest update says BlueBirds 14, 15 and 16 are expected to ship for the next mission, while satellites 17 through 46 are in various stages of production and assembly. That is a manufacturing update, not a guarantee that all those spacecraft will reach orbit on schedule. Launch availability, testing, regulatory work and satellite deployment remain potential sources of delay.
Carrier partnerships will shape what customers receive
AST is not presenting the network as a conventional nationwide carrier with its own retail plans. Its stated model is to provide satellite capacity through mobile network operators. In the United States, its announced partners include AT&T and Verizon, so access is likely to arrive as a carrier feature, add-on or plan benefit rather than as an entirely separate replacement for terrestrial wireless service.
The company says it has agreements or understandings with more than 60 mobile network operators globally. It is also pursuing a mix of spectrum supplied through carrier partners and mobile-satellite spectrum it controls. Those arrangements are central to the network: the satellites must operate on authorized frequencies and connect through carrier systems before ordinary subscribers can use them.
AST’s most recent publicly available quarterly filing before the launch described its initial service as noncontinuous in selected markets, including the United States, Europe and Japan. That qualification is important. Early service may be available only when a satellite is overhead, rather than providing an uninterrupted connection comparable to a mature terrestrial network.
The intended benefit is coverage where building towers is difficult or uneconomical, including rural roads, remote recreation areas and regions affected by terrestrial outages. Satellite service can narrow those gaps, but it does not erase the capacity advantage of a dense ground network. Urban towers can reuse spectrum across many small coverage areas; a satellite beam covers a much larger region and must share its available capacity accordingly.
What wireless customers should watch
Customers do not need to change plans or buy equipment based on this launch alone. The useful milestones now are carrier announcements that identify eligible plans, supported devices, geographic availability, included services and any extra charge. It will also matter whether the first commercial version supports only messaging and emergency functions or extends to voice and general data.
AST’s 13-satellite fleet makes the network more tangible than a single test spacecraft, but the purchasing decision remains premature. Until AT&T or Verizon publishes retail terms and a service map, consumers should treat the project as an approaching coverage option—not as a current substitute for checking terrestrial coverage where they live and travel.
