Optimum said on August 31 that it has expanded its multi-year agreement with T-Mobile, giving its mobile business access to T-Mobile's 5G Standalone platform and broader support for smartphones, wearables, tablets, and other connected devices. This is a wholesale network agreement between two companies, and an expansion, not a debut: Optimum Mobile already operates as a T-Mobile MVNO. No rate plan, price, or promotion came with it.
For the roughly 724,000 lines already on Optimum Mobile, the detail that matters sits in the technical work ahead. Many existing devices are expected to transition seamlessly. Some will require a migration plan, and neither Optimum's release nor Light Reading's reporting says which devices, what those customers would have to do, or whether any cost is involved.
Light Reading reported that Optimum added 49,900 mobile lines in the second quarter to reach 724,000 total, implying about 674,100 at the start of the quarter and roughly 7.4% sequential growth. Optimum's own release used the rounder figure, saying it had surpassed 700,000 mobile lines. Financial terms of the MVNO agreement were not disclosed.
Integration starts in 2026, full launch expected in early 2027
Optimum chief product and technology officer Luciano Ramos told Light Reading that integration with T-Mobile's 5G Standalone platform begins in 2026, with full launch expected in early 2027. There is no retail availability date beyond that, and the sources do not establish when customer-facing changes will begin.
According to Light Reading, Optimum runs its own mobile core from four U.S. locations, and that core is being integrated with T-Mobile's 5G Standalone platform. Light Reading also reports that many existing devices are expected to transition seamlessly, while some will require a migration plan; the sources do not explain why particular devices would require one.
The performance claims are Optimum's own
Optimum says the arrangement will enable faster response times, improved reliability, greater network efficiency, and support for next-generation mobile services. It also says the agreement will enhance domestic and international roaming and expand connectivity in rural and hard-to-reach parts of the United States. Those are the company's own characterizations, and none of them is quantified. The announcement carries no speed, latency, reliability, or coverage figures, and no independent testing. Light Reading reports the integration is expected to provide access to T-Mobile's domestic and international roaming partners and broader support for T-Mobile-certified devices, but roaming countries, allowances, rates, eligible plans, and start dates all go unstated.
What wasn't announced
No plan name and no price. No AutoPay requirement, activation fee, tax-and-fee treatment, priority or premium data allowance, deprioritization rule, throttling term, hotspot allowance, or hotspot speed. No device-financing restriction, phone promotion, or change to customer contracts either; the agreement itself is described as multi-year, but that's a carrier-to-carrier term, not a new commitment for subscribers. Light Reading also reported that direct-to-device satellite service isn't an immediate Optimum Mobile priority.
What Optimum Mobile customers should do now
No immediate customer action was announced. Full launch on T-Mobile's 5G Standalone platform is expected in early 2027, although integration begins in 2026 and no customer-facing availability date is established. The sources do not identify affected devices, say what customers would need to do, or specify how Optimum will contact them.
Two other items belong on a calendar rather than in a budget. Ramos identified wearable and additional-device lines as a key 2027 deliverable that he said could enable better family discounts and bundles, with no prices or eligibility terms disclosed. Optimum also intends to introduce mobile packages tailored to small and midsize businesses during the first half of 2027, again without pricing. Both are stated intentions. On the evidence available, neither is a reason to buy, switch, or stay.
