Apple shipped iOS 27.0.1 on Sept. 28, aimed at a problem where some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max phones could restart unexpectedly when Face ID authentication failed. Apple's security releases page lists 27.0.1 as the latest version of iOS and iPadOS, dated Sept. 28, 2026, and says it is available for iPhone 11 and later. The same page says the update has no published CVE entries. MacRumors reports that this is the first update since iOS 27.
The short version: If your 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max has been rebooting after failed Face ID attempts, this is the release meant to fix that. If your phone has been working normally, Apple lists no published CVE entries for iOS 27.0.1.
What the release notes cover
MacRumors reproduced Apple's release notes in its report on the release. The notes list three fixes:
- Restarts: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could restart unexpectedly when Face ID failed to authenticate.
- Camera: A color artifact could appear in 2x photos taken at f/1.48 in certain lighting. Apple says this affected a small number of 18 Pro and Pro Max units.
- Touchscreen: The screen could stop responding when Notification Center and Control Center were opened at the same time.
Apple's security page confirms the version, date and compatibility, but it doesn't display those three notes; the list above comes from MacRumors' copy of Apple's release notes. MacRumors says the update is available to every iPhone that can run iOS 27.
What it doesn't claim to fix
MacRumors reported a wider range of complaints from 18 Pro owners:
- Face ID failing to authenticate
- Freezing followed by a reboot
- A "Face ID unavailable" message during setup
- Problems with the Require Attention for Face ID setting
Apple's notes cover the unexpected restart after a failed Face ID attempt. They don't cover that whole list. The touchscreen fix covers one specific trigger, opening both control panels at once, and shouldn't be read as a cure for every freeze.
No source we reviewed has installed the update and tested it. For now, the only evidence that the listed bugs are fixed is Apple's own release notes. MacRumors also says it's still unclear whether the 18 Pro's under-display infrared camera design played a role in the Face ID trouble.
How to install it
Apple's update instructions:
- Back up the iPhone.
- Connect it to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Choose Download and Install, then follow the onscreen instructions.
If the update doesn't appear on the phone, you can install it using a computer. Apple also says a VPN or proxy connection can sometimes stop a device from reaching its update servers, so check that if Software Update comes up empty.
Back up first, for one specific reason: Apple's security releases page says an installed iOS update cannot be downgraded to the previous version. Once you install 27.0.1, you can't go back to iOS 27.0.
On Sept. 25, we reported that Apple had acknowledged the restart bug and said a fix was coming. It's here. 18 Pro owners with other Face ID or freezing problems should watch whether their specific issue continues after updating.
