iPhone Duo Preorders Open Oct. 16: What the Foldable Gives Up

Apple opens iPhone Duo preorders October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific. The foldable starts at $1,999 for 256GB and becomes available October 23, and Apple's store page says shoppers can start preparing their order October 12. These specifications are not newly announced — they have been public since Apple’s September announcement — so what follows is a buyer comparison ahead of preorder day, not a product reveal. It draws on Apple's own pages and an October 3 SlashGear rundown of what the foldable leaves out.

The bottom line: the Duo unfolds to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display. Paying for that screen means giving up features you may use every day, including a dedicated telephoto camera, Face ID and the Action button. Two plan details matter as well for shoppers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The phone is eSIM-only, and carrier financing can keep it locked until it is paid off.

The trade-offs you are most likely to notice

The biggest camera difference is reach. Apple's Duo specifications list 48MP main and ultrawide cameras plus a 12MP 2x optical-quality crop from the main sensor, with digital zoom topping out at 10x. Apple also advertises a “4x total optical-quality zoom range,” though the longest optical-quality option it lists for the Duo is still that 2x crop. The iPhone 18 Pro carries a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera with 4x and 8x focal-length options and reaches up to 8x optical-quality zoom. Shooting a school game from across the field, you'll feel the gap.

Unlocking works differently too. The Duo reads your fingerprint through a Touch ID sensor in its side button. SlashGear reports there's no Face ID and no Action button; Apple's Duo spec page doesn't mention either one, while its 18 Pro page lists a customizable Action button. The Duo's outer Center Stage camera is 12MP at f/2.2, against the 18 Pro's 18MP front camera. Open the Duo and a separate under-display camera takes over for FaceTime.

Battery life depends on which screen you're using. Apple rates the Duo for up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one. That 13-hour gap works out to about 30% less playback on the big folding screen, which is the feature buyers are paying for.

Specialist camera features are another dividing line

The Duo's main camera has a fixed f/1.6 aperture. The 18 Pro switches among f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, and it adds Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram. SlashGear also reports the Duo lacks LiDAR, ProRAW, ProRes and ProRes RAW recording, and spatial photo and video capture. Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock on the 18 Pro. SlashGear attributes the cuts to the demands of foldable hardware, but that's the publication's reading, not a rationale Apple gives on the pages we reviewed.

Those gaps land hardest on people who edit RAW photos, work in professional video pipelines or want manual control over exposure. For buyers who mostly take casual photos, the missing telephoto lens will probably sting more than the missing Pro formats.

Higher storage gets expensive quickly

Apple's connect-later prices climb to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. That's $200, $600 or $1,200 above the 256GB model. The 2TB version costs about 60% more than the base Duo.

Check eSIM support and financing locks

Duo models sold in the U.S. and Puerto Rico ship without a physical SIM tray. If you're on a prepaid brand or an MVNO, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM activation before you order, not after the box arrives. Apple also says a Duo financed through an AT&T Installment Plan, a T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan or the Verizon Device Payment Program stays locked to that carrier until it is paid in full; most other iPhones bought straight from Apple arrive unlocked. The store page advertises carrier savings offers as well. We did not verify their terms, so check each offer for any eligibility, trade-in, installment or bill-credit requirements before counting on the savings.

Who should skip it

Our judgment: If telephoto photos, Face ID or Pro camera controls rank high on your list, skip the Duo and compare the 18 Pro instead. The Duo earns its price for someone who wants the folding screen enough to live with those compromises. Camera-focused buyers have another option: wait for independent hands-on testing after October 23 before ordering.
